The Everest Base Camp Trek is a 14-day journey through Nepal’s Khumbu region to the foot of the world’s highest mountain. Beginning with the mountain flight to Lukla at approximately 2,860 metres, the trail follows the Dudh Koshi valley through Phakding and Monjo before climbing into the heart of Sagarmatha National Park and reaching Namche Bazaar.
From Namche, the journey continues deeper into the Everest Region through forests, river valleys and traditional Sherpa settlements. The trail passes Tengboche, known for its Buddhist monastery and remarkable Himalayan setting, before continuing through Pangboche toward the increasingly open landscapes of Dingboche. Along the way, Ama Dablam becomes one of the most distinctive mountains on the horizon, while Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and other high peaks gradually become part of the surrounding landscape.
As the trek moves beyond Dingboche at approximately 4,410 metres, the character of the Khumbu changes dramatically. Forests disappear, settlements become smaller and the trail enters a colder world of alpine valleys, rocky moraine and glacial terrain. The route passes Thukla and its nearby mountaineering memorials before reaching Lobuche at approximately 4,940 metres.
From Lobuche, the trail continues toward Gorak Shep, the final major settlement before Everest Base Camp. Walking across the rugged moraine landscape beside the Khumbu Glacier eventually leads to Everest Base Camp at approximately 5,364 metres. Here, trekkers stand within the extraordinary glacial environment below Mount Everest and close to the famous Khumbu Icefall used by climbing expeditions.
The journey also includes the ascent of Kala Patthar, commonly referenced at approximately 5,545 metres. Rising above Gorak Shep, it provides one of the classic elevated perspectives across the Everest massif when mountain conditions are clear, with Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Pumori and the Khumbu Glacier forming part of the surrounding panorama.
After reaching the highest section of the journey, the trail descends through Pheriche and Pangboche, returning toward the greener landscapes around Tengboche and Namche Bazaar before following the Dudh Koshi valley back toward Lukla.
What makes the Everest Base Camp Trek in Nepal especially memorable is the transformation experienced along the route. In less than two weeks, the trail moves from riverside villages and rhododendron forests to Sherpa mountain communities, Buddhist monasteries, exposed alpine valleys and finally the immense glacial landscape of the upper Khumbu.
Everest Base Camp may be the destination that gives the trek its name, but the complete experience is the journey between Lukla and Everest Base Camp—walking through the changing landscapes and communities of the Everest Region until the world's highest mountains are no longer distant shapes on the horizon, but part of the environment surrounding the trail.
At Himalayan Trek Ventures, we want you to reach Everest Base Camp, but we do not believe reaching it should come at the expense of the journey.
Our approach emphasizes thoughtful acclimatization, realistic pacing, local mountain knowledge and decisions based on the conditions we actually encounter.
We want you to know why we stop in Namche, why we walk higher during acclimatization, why the pace changes beyond Dingboche, why the memorials above Thukla matter, and why Kala Patthar and Everest Base Camp provide two very different experiences.
Because years later, the memory is unlikely to be only the sign at 5,364 metres.
It may be the first glimpse of the mountains above Namche, the sound of the Dudh Koshi below a suspension bridge, morning light on Ama Dablam, the silence of the upper Khumbu, a cold walk above Gorak Shep—or the people who shared the trail with you.
That is the Everest Base Camp Trek we want to share.
