Everest Region

The main trekking seasons in the Everest Region are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when conditions are generally most suitable for high-altitude trekking. Spring brings gradually warmer days and seasonal colour at lower elevations, while autumn is especially known for clearer skies and crisp mountain views.

Winter, from December to February, can offer quieter trails and excellent visibility, but temperatures become extremely cold at higher elevations and snow can affect high passes. The summer monsoon, generally from June to August, brings more cloud, rainfall and possible flight disruption, although trekking is still possible with flexible planning.

Conditions in the Himalaya can change quickly in any season, so the best time also depends on the specific route, altitude and type of journey being planned.

Most trekking journeys into the Everest Region begin with a flight to Lukla, the main gateway to the Khumbu. Depending on the season and flight operations, Lukla flights may depart directly from Kathmandu or from Ramechhap, which requires an overland journey from Kathmandu before the flight.

From Lukla, trails continue on foot through villages such as Phakding and Namche Bazaar before branching toward Everest Base Camp, Gokyo and other parts of the region. For travellers who prefer a longer approach, the Everest Region can also be reached overland through lower Solukhumbu, allowing additional trekking days and a more gradual journey into the high Himalaya.

Weather can affect mountain flights, particularly around Lukla, so keeping some flexibility in the travel schedule is sensible when planning a trek in the Everest Region.

Trekking in the Everest Region generally requires entry documentation for Sagarmatha National Park, while routes passing through the Khumbu area may also require the applicable local government entry permit. Permit requirements can vary depending on the exact route, particularly for itineraries extending into restricted or less commonly visited areas.

Travellers should carry their passport and required permits during the trek, as documents may be checked at entry points and along the route. Regulations and fees can change, so current requirements should always be confirmed before departure.
