About Marulung Village
Marulung Village: A Quiet Himalayan Settlement on the Renjo La Trek
Marulung Village, also written as Marlung, is a small high-altitude settlement in Nepal’s Everest region, located at approximately 4,210 metres (13,812 feet) in the upper Bhote Koshi valley. Between the traditional Sherpa village of Thame and the higher settlement of Lungden, Marulung sits on a quieter trekking route connecting Namche Bazaar with Renjo La Pass and the Gokyo Lakes. Although it receives far less attention than Everest Base Camp or Namche Bazaar, the village is an important stopping point for trekkers exploring the western side of Khumbu.
The walk towards Marulung from Thame follows the Bhote Koshi valley, gradually leaving the busier trekking settlements behind. Stone buildings, open grazing areas, rocky slopes and the sound of flowing mountain streams shape the surroundings. As the trail climbs higher, vegetation becomes sparse and the valley feels increasingly exposed. The landscape is different from the forested approaches to Namche, offering a closer look at the rugged terrain of the upper Khumbu.
Marulung also lies along a historic Himalayan trade corridor associated with routes towards Tibet through Nangpa La. For generations, the wider Thame valley was connected with cross-border trade and seasonal livestock movement. Today, the trail is better known among trekkers travelling between Thame, Lungden and Gokyo, but its geographical connection to the old trading routes remains an important part of the area's history.
For trekkers heading towards Renjo La Pass, Marulung is a useful place to pause before continuing uphill to Lungden, a common overnight stop before the high crossing. Travelling in the opposite direction, hikers descending from Gokyo over Renjo La pass through Lungden and may continue to Marulung for the night. Accommodation is limited and simple, so the village is best approached with flexible expectations rather than the facilities available in larger Everest trekking centres.
One of Marulung's strongest attractions is its setting. The surrounding valley has fewer commercial trekking facilities than the main Everest Base Camp route, and the path offers views of steep mountain slopes, scattered high-altitude settlements and the Bhote Koshi drainage. Trekkers can appreciate the changing character of the landscape as they move between the more established village of Thame and the higher, more exposed terrain around Lungden.
Despite its peaceful surroundings, Marulung is already above 4,000 metres, where altitude requires serious attention. It is not a suitable place to rush towards without acclimatisation. Travellers should follow a sensible ascent schedule, monitor symptoms of altitude sickness and allow sufficient time for the journey, particularly when approaching Renjo La.
Marulung Village may not be the most famous destination in the Everest region, but it plays a meaningful role in the Renjo La Pass Trek and Everest Three Passes Trek. Whether you stop for a short break, meet local lodge owners or spend a night before continuing through the Bhote Koshi valley, Marulung offers an opportunity to experience a quieter side of trekking in Nepal, away from the busiest routes of Khumbu.
