Visa Information
Making the Adventurous Journey to the Himalayas
Nepal has generally friendly and easy visa regulations for most foreign travelers. For visitors coming for trekking, sightseeing, or any cultural experience, if you understand the visa regulations and procedures, your entry into Nepal should be smooth.
- Visa on Arrival (Tourist Visa)
Most foreign nationals may receive a Tourist visa upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu) or certain selected land border crossings (for example, with India or Tibet).
Entry Requirements:
A passport that is valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended entry date
At least one blank page for visa stamping
One passport photo (a digital copy will usually suffice at some entry points)
Completed the arrival card and online visa application form
Visa fees (pay in cash, preferably in USD)
- Visa Types and Fees
Duration of Stay Visa Fee (USD)
15 days $30
30 days $50
90 days $125
NB Visa duration is counted from the date you enter Nepal.
- Online Visa Application (Highly Suggested).
Travelers should try to get the online visa application done before you arrive in Nepal to avoid wasting time during the arrival process. You can use the official Department of Immigration portal:
You may apply as late as 15 days before the date of your arrival.
The confirmation barcode slip, once completed, must be printed or saved.
When presenting the slip with your passport upon arrival in Nepal, it accommodates the process to go much faster.
- Visa Extensions:
If you want to stay longer than your consented tourism visa, and your visa is close to expiring, you can obtain an extension to your visa at the Department of Immigration office in Kathmandu or Pokhara.
Extension Fee:
Up to 15 days – USD 45
After 15 days – $3 per day
Maximum total of days on a tourist visa: 150 days in a calendar year.
Important. Overstay fees will apply a USD 5 a day plus fines, or you could have legal issues. You should apply for an extension before the expiration date of your visa.
- Special Visa Policies.
SAARC Nationals (excluding Afghanistan) – once in a calendar year, you will be eligible for a free 30-day visa.
Indian Nationals – no visa requirement to enter Nepal.
Children under 10 years – visas issued free of charge (must still have documentation).
Note: Some nationalities will need to apply in advance. Please check with your local Nepali consulate or embassy, or let us help guide you through this process.
Some nationalities (ie, Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Cameroon, Iraq, etc) will need to obtain a visa beforehand from a Nepali embassy or consulate prior to travelling to Nepal. It’s worth checking with your local Nepali diplomatic mission before you finalize your plans.
- Important Travel Tips for Visa Applicants
Always carry cash in USD for payment, as card payments are not accepted everywhere.
Always ensure your passport is in good condition and has enough validity and blank pages.
Travel with a printed or digital copy of your trekking itinerary, hotel reservations, or travel plans in case an immigration officer wishes to see proof of your plans.
Himalayan Trek Ventures organizes all trekking permits and all relevant internal documents for you directly, but your tourist visa is your personal responsibility.
While travelling, you should always have copies of your passport and visa.
- Other information
A tourist visa is a single-entry visa; if you depart Nepal and return, you will be required to apply for a new visa.
Visa processing times at land borders may take longer – you should make allowances for this and plan your arrival time accordingly.
If you intend to trek in restricted or protected areas, eg, Manaslu, Dolpo, Kanchenjunga, special trekking permits are required. We will arrange this for you; these permit approvals do not take the place of your tourist visa.
