Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Lakes – 16 Days Introduction

Where Ice Meets Sky and Lakes Speak to the Clouds

“There are stone paths, and silence paths, paths of reflection and snowmelt– this is one of those.”

This is not just a trek, but a path of solitude and grandeur. Crossing passes in the high alpine; drinking in the glassy silence of Gokyo’s sacred lakes, gazing into the intimidating wall of Everest, waking to a sunrise at Kalapatthar that will be remembered.

The 16-day Everest Base Camp Trek via Gokyo Lakes takes a poetic diversion from traditional routes—a route that is not just walked upon, but has been laid down in spirit and in silence. It enters a unique world, seeing the sparkling sapphire blue of Gokyo Lakes, crossing the vertiginous ice-folds of Cho La Pass, and entering the homestead of Everest.

This trek is perfect for trekkers searching for a much more meditative hike—tranquil trails, vacant lakes, and unbroken reflections of the mountains. So this trek is hugely suitable for trekkers looking to not only look at the Himalaya, but feel the Himalaya—trekking everyday masterpieces where Gokyo Ri gives you 360 degrees of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. The Valleys of the sacred Chhu Khola echo the sound of long-lost monasteries. The 1st magical morning of sunrise on Kalapathar, as golden light pours over Everest, reveals you haven’t arrived, you have been shown.

This trip is ideal for those who wish to absorb variety, solitude, and altitude, and is an obsessive blend of all the views and sites of Everest Base Camp with the contemplative splendour of Gokyo.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this trek harder than the regular EBC route?
This trek is more difficult than the standard Everest Base Camp trek. It is much more physically demanding as this trek has high-altitude crossings (like Cho La Pass) and remote Gokyo Valley trails. However, with proper acclimatization and prep, this trek should be completely attainable for fit trekkers.
Do I need to have trekking experience?
It is helpful if you have experience in high-altitude trekking, but it is not a must. You do, however, need to be in great physical condition when you start and reasonably comfortable hiking 6-8 hours each day with a loaded day pack.
What is the highest point on this trek?
The highest point will be at Kala Patthar at 5,545 meters. Cho La Pass is 5,420 meters, and Gokyo Ri is 5,360 meters.
Is altitude sickness a concern?
Yes. Given the multiple high passes to cross as well as the time spent at altitude, this trek has an elevated risk of AMS (acute mountain sickness). Our itinerary includes acclimatization days, and your guides will have the experience to monitor acute mountain sickness symptoms. We recommend bringing Diamox and consulting with your doctor prior.
What is a good time to do this trek?
The best seasons are: Spring (March–May): Clear skies, blooming rhododendrons, and trail conditions are still good. Autumn (September – November): Crisp mountain views, stable weather, with lively festivals in the villages.
What type of accommodation is there?
You’ll be accommodated in local teahouses and lodges. The facilities are basic, but generally clean, with shared toilets. Rooms are twin-sharing, have warm blankets, but a 4-season sleeping bag is strongly recommended. You’ll be able to get hot showers and get charged in some places, but you will need to pay extra.
Is there Wi-Fi and mobile signal during the trek?
Wi-Fi is available in many villages (Everest Link cards), however, it's slow and expensive. Ncell and NTC provide any sort of cellular networks intermittently. However, I would recommend that you disconnect and enjoy the silence of the mountains
Do I carry my own backpack?
You only carry a day pack (water bottle, snacks, jacket for the day). A porter will carry any and all of your personal gear in a duffel bag that will weigh 10-12 kg. Please let us know if you’d like to hire a personal porter.
